Abstract
An examination of six techniques for quantifying and digitizing human body shape is presented. Laser scanning, stereogrammetry and sonic digitization were among the techniques assessed. Data was gathered from specimen headforms and modelled on a computer-aided design system (CAD-system). A feasibility study of shape averaging techniques was carried out for simple shapes using a 386-based computer. Problems of alignment and surface recognition were present but solutions showed considerable promise for more complex 3-D surfaces later.
