Abstract
In phased arrays, antenna elements are normally simple radiators, and beam control is achieved by varying the relative phase of each element. To reduce the complexity of the array, the number of elements can be reduced but at the expense of grating lobes in the field-of-view. In this study, more complex array elements are used to steer a null on a grating lobe. These array elements operate with two azimuthal modes that are controlled in amplitudes and phase. The result is an array with fewer but more complex elements. Depending on specific applications, a reduction in the complexity of the array can be obtained.
