Abstract
The report summarizes recent work directed toward the development of an effective finite element-based eigensolution capability for coupled fluid/structure interaction problems in which the fluid compressibility is included. Solution of these coupled problems is essential in the evaluation of structural acoustic transmission characteristics and enclosure acoustics. The methodologies are also of direct relevance to the acoustic radiation problem as well as other forms of time domain analysis. A comprehensive review of the four general methods of treating this problem is presented with the objective of establishing future directions most compatible with existing finite element analysis capability. Several example applications of the different methods are presented to highlight practical considerations.
