INVESTIGATION INTO THE ULTRASONIC NDE OF ADHESIVELY BONDED JOINTS

Abstract
In order to define the scope of this current project, it was decided to develop techniques by which the adhesive properties of bonds may be degraded and to seek ultrasonic methods capable of detecting the subsequent degradation in bond quality. Due to the short duration of this particular project (3 months), it was also decided to further limit the investigation to the detection of degraded aluminum - aluminum adhesive bonds. The application of leaky Lamb waves using an ultrasonic spectroscopic technique has been the central focus of this study to date. The results of this initial investigation have also been compared to the more conventional application of normally incident plane compressional waves.
