Abstract
The report documents work accomplished in an investigation into block amalgamation under Expert System control, within a system designed for the high-level recognition of elements on document pages. When segmented document pages are submitted to an Expert System, it is sometimes possible to determine that some logical blocks on the page (e.g. the "Salutation" block) have been segmented into more than one physical block. In such cases, it may be desirable to reconstitute the logical block from the separate physical parts. The study of the feasibility and usefulness of this amalgamation process forms the subject of this report. The system was in existence before the present study was undertaken, and required significant enhancements to allow the block amalgamation to be accomplished and its results studied. The report details the necessary preparation of the system, the various proposed approaches to the present problem, and the nature of the implementation selected.
