Abstract
The report documents work accomplished in an investigation into block splitting under Expert System control, within a system designed for the high-level recognition of elements on document pages. When segmented document pages are submitted to an Expert System, it is sometimes possible to determine that some blocks contain more than one logical element of the page. In such cases, it may be desirable to split the block into its constituent parts. The study of the feasibility and usefulness of this splitting process forms the subject of this report. The system was in existence before the present study was undertaken, and required significant enhancements to allow the block splitting to be accomplished and its results studied. The report details the necessary preparation of the system, the various proposed approaches to the present problem, and the nature of the implementation selected.
