Abstract
EDSA (Expert Data flow and Static Analysis) is a tool that helps to reduce the time required by programmers to find bugs in program logic or to generally understand the logic of unfamiliar code. Unlike most software development tools, EDSA is most useful in the maintenance phase of the software development life cycle. Since maintenance is often the costliest single phase in the life cycle, the benefits of a tool which reduces the time to perform maintenance can be considerable. The report describes the results of Phase 1 of the EDSA Project. In this phase ASC developed a prototype of EDSA, which performs static analysis of Ada programs. It allows programmers to follow control and data flow, to generate specialized views of the program, and to keep track of what they have done and what flow paths have and have not been followed.
