Abstract
The project covered by this contract was seen as having two distinct parts. The first involves: scanning a piece of correspondence (a letter); recreating the scanned image on a display; using the scanned image to 'segment' the letter into a number of 'blocks' (areas of words or graphics on an otherwise white page); showing the results of the segmentation process on the display; abstracting the page layout of these blocks to a standardized matrix form; and using an optical character recognition (OCR) process to determine the words in each block. The second part of the project uses the output of the first (the blocks with their relative positions on the page and the ASCII contents of each), and attempts to associate each block with a particular recognizable block type (such as DATE, ORIGin, SALUtation).
