Abstract
An automated ultrasonic inspection and data collection system, APHIUS (Automated Pressure Hull Intelligent Ultrasonic System), was designed using a microcomputer as an ultrasonic testing and analysis workstation. Pulser-receiver and digitizer expansion boards within the computer provide acquisition of ultrasonic data. The computer monitor displays the conventional video and RF ultrasonic signals. Full waveforms are stored to disk for automated interpretation within the same computer either on-line or post test. A special expansion board incorporates an air-borne sonic location system for transducer position and logs the location of each digitzed waveform for depth profiling and corrosion mapping. Advanced pattern recognition methods are used for waveform interpretation with respect to defect type and size. The modular design permits the system to be configured for other NDT inspection methods such as eddy-currents, acoustic emission and acousto-ultrasonics.
