Abstract
The report describes the detail design of a trusted packet switching device. The purpose of the design stage is to serve as input to the specification stage in which formal m-Verdi specifications of the device will be produced. The switching device is patterned after an Internet gateway, the type of which is used in the ARPANET network family. The main function of a gateway is to switch datagrams; this is similar to the function of a packet switching device which is to switch packets. Both packets and datagrams are self contained pieces of information which are the basic information exchange unit among computers on a network. This document presents the architecture of the packet switching device and the switching functions the device will be called upon to perform. Other design and operational considerations are included.
