Abstract
The study was initiated to establish a common framework that would provide a better understanding of the attrition patterns experienced within the officer occupations of the Canadian Forces (CF), and specifically, to place the high pilot attrition observed in recent years in perspective to other occupations. Thirteen officer occupations were included in the study. These occupations were selected to provide an overview of engineering, operations and support, reflecting employment in sea, land and air environments. Since propensity to leave the CF is not constant throughout an officer's career, but varies in part with the different stages of his career, the analysis is separated into three periods of approximately 10 years each. Attrition statistics have been presented in a variety of forms throughout the report so as to identify the structural and behavioural aspects of attrition and the groupings of personnel most affected.
