Underwater Acoustic Localization of a Surface Dipole Source

Abstract
Following a signal detection on towed linear array data that has undergone conventional beamforming, it is desirable to determine if the detection was due to a source modelled as a moving surface dipole. A Surface Dipole Localization (SDL) algorithm is proposed and evaluated. The SDL inputs are the beamformer time series. The SDL algorithm is a beamformer grid search over trial source position-velocity parameters. That grid point that maximizes the SDL beamformer output estimates the source position-velocity parameters.
