PRELIMINARY NMR STUDY OF VARIOUS POLYMERIC MATERIALS

Abstract
A series of eight carbon black filled bromobutyl rubber samples were prepared and allowed to age under ambient conditions for five months. Carbon-13 (C-13) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analyses and concomitant physical testing allowed comparisons to be made in that time span. NMR chemical shift analysis provided direct observation of the nature and extent of oxidation in the solid samples studied. Correlations among the C-13 NMR relaxation times (T.CH, T.1pH and T.2') and the mechanical properties measured were also demonstrated. Thus, C-13 solid sate properties measured were also demonstrated. Thus, C-13 solid state NMR measurements provided unambiguous quantitative and qualitative measures of ageing of the rubber samples studied over a short period of time.
