DESIGN OF MARINE PROPELLER BLADE SECTIONS WITH THICKENED LEADING EDGES

Abstract
Previous work has shown that the leading edge of a propeller blade section can be thickened a modest amount without impairing its cavitation characteristics. The present investigation examined the results of unloading the section leading edge in order to achieve a greater degree of thickening. Local increases in thickness of up to 33 percent were obtained. Two sections resulting from the investigation were tested in the Ohio State University blowdown wind tunnel. Their predicted cavitation characteristics were, for the most part, confirmed by the tests.
