FINITE ELEMENT INVESTIGATION OF A TANKER MIDSHIP WEBFRAME BULKHEAD USING THE HVAST PROGRAM

Abstract
Deflections and stress distributions of a transverse midship webframe bulkhead from a 355,000 tonne tanker subject to a hydraulic tank test load with associated displacement loading are estimated by linear elastic finite element analysis. This analysis is done with computer codes comprising the HVAST package developed by Defence Research Establishment Atlantic (DREA) for finite element analysis of ship structures. This work is also part of a study for Committee II.1 of the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC), to compare results for this same problem determined by 12 different international agencies, each with their own method of approach. Localized mesh refinement with multi-point constraints and top-down modelling with prescribed displacements have been used to determine localized stress patterns in large 3-D models. This work has also proved useful in verifying and improving the HVAST ship structural analysis software.
