Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine whether a relatively low-cost image generator could provide a visual display suitable for a submarine periscope simulator. To make this assessment twelve experienced submarine officers were tasked to estimate the angle-on-the-bow (ATB) of computer-generated images of the new Canadian Patrol Frigate (CPF). Images of the ship were simulated as if seen thorugh the attack periscope. Observers were able to estimate the model's orientation within criteria for acceptable performance at sea on 87% of occasions. The average amount of time taken by the officers to view the display was less than 3 seconds. These results provide evidence that the image generator can provide the spatial information necessary to support skilled performance. The implication is that an inexpensive periscope simulator can be successfully developed by using this technological approach.
