Abstract
The EHF SATCOM (Extremely High Frequency Satellite Communications) project includes a contract in industry for a ground-based model of a frequency hopping spread spectrum satellite communications system. There is also an in-house effort in key technical areas. One requirement is for a Hopping Synthesizer Controller to drive a frequency synthesizer, and is the subject of this report. The controller was built on a single board using a digital signal processor for calculations and an erasable programmable logic device for interfacing. It provides the pseudo-random hopping sequence, modulation, channel selection and doppler precorrection. The Hopping Synthesizer Controller can drive the frequency synthesizer at hop rates up to 25 khops/s. Four configurations are supported: operation within either the payload or ground terminal simulator, for uplink or downlink. TRUNCATED
