INVESTIGATIONS OF 2,2' BIPYRIDINE OXIMES AS NOVEL METAL LIGANDS FOR CHEMICAL WARFARE DECONTAMINATION

Abstract
The transition metal complexes 6,6'-dihydroxyiminomethyl-2,2'-bipyridylpalladium(II)dichloride. 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridylpalladium(II)dichloride and bis-(pyridine-2-carboxaldoximato)platinum(II) were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, IR and elemental analysis. The interaction of zinc(II) with 6,6'-dihydroxyiminomethyl-2,2'-bipyridine was investigated by 1H NMR. Studies into the effects of transition metals upon the pKa's of the oxime functional groups of the following ligands were carried out on 6.6'-dihydroxyiminomethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and 2-pyridinecarboxaldoxime. The complex bis-(pyridine-2-carboxaldoximato)platinum(II) was reacted with trifluoroacetic acid in order to establish the pKa of the oxime functional group of the monoprotonated product. The palladium and zinc transition metal complexes of the ligand 6,6'-dihydroxyiminomethyl-2,2'-bipyridine were also investigated with an interest in carrying out a similar pKa determination.
