Abstract
Deals with a comprehensive metallographic and mechanical property characterization that has been carried out on two commercial HSLA-80 steels with slightly differing compositions, in particular, sulphur contents. Both steels meet the strength and toughness criteria for naval structural applications. Microstructural features rather than the sulphur level appear to be the main factor controlling the transition temperature, whereas upper shelf energy is essentially controlled by sulphur level.
