Abstract
In this report the current status of neural network research is reviewed and the role of optical technology in the future development of parallel computing architectures is assessed. Attention is given to applications which relate to the national defence environment and which are likely to benefit from this new technology. The development of optical neural computing will require significant advances in the area of optical devices. Those optical technologies which are likely to have the greatest impact on optical computing are reviewed. Finally, recommendations are presented for the directions in which canadian research and development efforts in optical and neural computing might proceed.
