Abstract
This is the final report for a contract on the evaluation of optical and neural computing architectures. The object of this phase was to evaluate the present capacities of the technologies for neural computers, optical computers and their architectures, optical neural nets and their architectures for computing. The area surveyed covers analog optical computing, digital optical computing, optical interconnections, optical computing devices and technologies, and optical neural nets. A detailed comparison of the fundamental capabilities of optics and of electronics is carried out, and the degree to which these capabilities have been achieved and these limitations reached is discussed. This is followed by an overview of the accomplishments of optical computing, of the proposals that have been made to explit the advantages of optics. TRUNCATED
