Abstract
The report develops the equations used to characterize the behaviour of piezoelectric materials. The equations are used to develop electromechanical models of piezoelectric actuator and sensor operation. These models are used to show that piezoceramics are well suited for use as actuators and PVDF films are well suited for use as sensors. The sensor and actuator interfacing electronics are specified, based on an analysis of the electromechanical models.
