Abstract
In this report, the literature on active damping using piezoelectric actuators and sensors is briefly surveyed. The research results are astonishing! Lee et al. have shown that piezoelectric films sensors and actuators can be shaped to observe and control individual modes of a structure. They were able to achieve a closed loop critical damping of a beam that had an open loop damping factor of 0.01. Miller and van Schoor have shown that full state feedback can be implemented in terms of the shape of a film sensor. Piezoelectric actuators have been successfully used to damp vibrations in both simple beams and complex truss structures.
