MULTI-ASPECT SONAR IMAGERY OF TARGETS: THE 1988 MCM TRIAL

Abstract
In 1988 a trial was conducted in which various targets were placed on the sea bottom and a side-scan sonar was used to image these targets. This report presents sonar imagery of these targets and other targets placed about two years earlier (1986). The targets consist of Mk. 36 dummy mines, horizontal and vertical cylinders, tethered spheres, a corner reflector and plywood sheets. Naturally occurring objects such as logs, rocks, shell beds and ship wrecks are also seen in the images. The images show these targets from a variety of aspects and ranges in a geographically correct orientation. This report demonstrates the feasibility of using geocoded sonar images to locate and classify objects on the sea bottom.
