Abstract
Documents the establishment of a laboratory capable of characterising piezoelectric materials so that new materials could be evaluated and their merit as sonar hydrophone material determined. The laboratory is now equipped to measure the following properties of piezoelectric specimens: the geometry, the density, the complex dielectric constant, the piezoelectric constant d sub 33, the hydrostatic voltage and charge constants (g sub h and d sub h) as a function of pressure, the elastic constants, the coupling constants, the acoustic impedance and all the usually quoted "figures of merit". The measurement systems have been checked using commercially available materials and calibrated specimens obtained from other research laboratories. In some cases standard methods of measurement have been improved or extended and these modifications are described in the report. The data collection has been automated to a considerable extent with the help of computers.
