Abstract
The report describes the work performed by under Phase III of the project to develop Fire-safe Insulating Cables for Ship Board Application. Phase III of the program was initiated in September 1989. During this phase of work the composition of the ceramic insulating layer was further improved by addition of silica to the basic composition of boron nitride and alumina. Optimized compositions of insulating layer with ceramics, low-temperature binders, polymeric materials and fire-retardants were developed and evaluated. Processing parameters such as extrudability of ceramics/polymer mix, rate of oil extraction, fiberglass and polymer skin properties were also evaluated. A critical review of the program was completed to establish the status of the accomplishment in terms of the original goal of the program.
