Abstract
The study was undertaken to determine the optimal array design for the localization of a target source under a variety of environmental conditions. This paper represents the first phase of a more comprehensive study to select the best array geometry for the more general conditions of moving sources in range dependent environments. In this study investigations were restricted to cases of stationary non-fluctuating sources in a shallow water range independent waveguide. Uner the constraints of stationary sources and range independent environments, the computational load is considerably reduced allowing for a greater number of array configurations to be investigated. To a first approximation, shallow water arctic environments on the continential shelf can be adequately modelled to evaluate array performance using range independent models.
