COMMENTS ON GRAIN GROWTH IN MAGNESIUM OXIDE

Abstract
Grain growth behaviour during isothermal sintering of MgO at 1600 oC in vacuum was studied. A comparison with some data from the literature reveals that three types of pore configurations can be met in undoped MgO, each of them affecting grain growth behaviour in different manner. Moreover, results obtained through double-anneal support the idea that residual impurities alter drastically grain growth kinetics when the driving force reaches a critical value and that pores grow by coalescence following boundary migration. Finally, pre-sintering at 900 oC decreases considerably the rate of growth at 1600 oC indicating that the grain growth in used MgO is dependent in a certain way on what happens during the early stage of sintering.
