Abstract
In the course of an investigation of the structure and mechanical properties of electrodeposited iron foils about 25 m in thickness, optical micrographs of cross-sections of foils deposited over a range of current densities revealed a structure consisting of columnar grains perpendicular to the substrate and traversing almost the entire thickness of the foils. Electron transmission micrographs of thin film sections of the foils parallel to the substrate, and revealing the structure of the columnar grains in cross-section, showed that those deposited at low current densities contained many large grains, some of which had parallel rows of dislocations near the grain boundaries.
