Abstract
The observations of leads, hummocks, tidal cracks and ice strains constitute the author's initial acquaintance with ice conditions above the arctic circle. Appa rent expansions and contractions in the level ice sheet of Thetis Bay give posit ive and negative values of strain averaging1.7 x 10E-4. The latter phenmenon may correspond to relative decreases and increases in air temperature from day to d ay. However, experimental sources of error are found to be significant and impro vements in technique are suggested.
