Abstract
Various government agencies including DND have indicated a need for cyber security and granular policy-based content protection within their networks and for protecting assets within applications. Polly is an experimental development project to research, prototype and evaluate a new policy-based cyber security architecture for protecting granular content. A proof-of-concept demonstrator was built based on the BRL IVY platform that illustrates distributed, secure, fine-grained sharing based on composed policies. It shows that information can be protected at rest and in motion at user-defined granularity and with user-defined security policies. Polly is unique in providing granular access, at the level of a spreadsheet cell, method of code, or paragraph, hence can support content micro-formats. A second unique capability is its generic policy framework which allows complex policies to be expressed as simple functional scripts. Polly has been designed to work in a distributed, shared artifact environment and supports the composition of complex policies based on the dynamic needs of interacting users.
