Abstract
The report surveys the approaches that have been made to the problem of measuring sea-ice thickness by indirect means, highlights and emphasizes the most serious difficulties involved in making such measurements and assesses the major capabilities and limitations of the several techniques that have been used or proposed. It is concluded from this review that there has not been proven, so far, a technique that can provide quantitative sea-ice thickness data for survey purposes.
