Efficient Wormhole Attack Detection and Mitigation

Abstract
This report proposes a new strategy to detect and mitigate wormhole attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). The proposed wormhole detection strategy modifies and combines two previously known strategies—a technique based on counting the number of hops taken by routing messages, and a technique that measures the apparent frequency modulation of probe messages sent into the network. We demonstrate how modifying and combining the two strategies results in both lower transmission overhead and improved wormhole detection accuracy. In addition to the detection strategy, this report also proposes a variety of methods to determine which nodes in the network have been affected by the detected wormhole, and how these nodes can re-configure their routing tables in order to mitigate this effect. The mitigation strategies proposed utilize a combination of heuristics, set theory, and information provided by the detection algorithms to identify routing table modifications.
