Abstract
Although the current 2D XFEM capability in VAST has been extensively verified and proved to be reliable, it was only available in a 4-noded quadrilateral shell element. However, in finite element analyses of complex engineering structures, the use of triangular elements cannot be avoided. In order to improve the usability of the 2D XFEM capability in VAST, a 3-noded triangular XFEM element was developed in this work as a degenerated 4-noded quadrilateral XFEM element by permitting node 3 and node 4 of the 4-noded quadrilateral element to occupy the same coordinates. In order to accomplish this, modifications were performed to the VAST source code on generating the stiffness, mass and stress matrices, performing the assembly, modification and decomposition of the stiffness matrix for the sparse direct matrix solver, storing the element stress matrices on scratch files, and computing the stresses for the 3-noded triangular XFEM element.
