Abstract
Project CRTI-06-0188TA, “Portable Optically Stimulated Luminescence Detector for Forensics and Retrospective Dosimetry,” was funded under the CBRNE Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI) to develop and test a single field prototype instrument, the Portable OSL Detector (POD), for forensic, arms control verification (ACV), and retrospective accident dosimetry applications. The project developed a laboratory prototype and a more mature field prototype device, both of which underwent testing in relevant scenarios. While some schedule delays were encountered during final prototype development, resulting in a reduction in the amount of field testing carried out on the device, the final prototype functioned well during tests. Additional supporting research, including material characterization and development of a database to facilitate the interpretation of OSL measurements, will be required before the technique is sufficiently mature for operational use.
