Free surface deformations caused by a submerged box

Abstract
As part of a project to determine the effect of underwater blockage on ice deformations at the free surface, free surface elevations caused by a rectangular box at different speeds and depths were calculated using the potential flow program POTFLO and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver ANSYSR⃝ CFXR⃝. The results of the calculations will be compared with experiments performed at National Research Council – Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering (NRC OCRE). The agreement between the two codes is generally poor due to the inability of POTFLO to account for the separation from the sharp corners of the box. Much better agreement was obtained when the box surface was displaced to the edges of the separation bubbles and to the displacement thickness of the boundary layer.
