Abstract
For Applied Research Project (ARP) 13oe, DRDC Ottawa developed a synthetic environment for the Arctic. In the initial phase of the project weather was identified as the highest priority item for realistic environmental simulation. In the second phase, a lightweight weather server was developed to store and disseminate weather conditions, and the commercial serious game VBS2 was modified with a plug-in to receive and respond to changing weather conditions from the server. This report documents these developments. It explains the user operation and internal workings of the weather server and its communication protocols, which are based on the Distributed Interactive Simulation standard. The operation of the VBS2 plug-in is also described in detail.
