Abstract
As part of the Applied Research Project (ARP) Sea State Awareness and Operator Guidance, a sea trial was conducted on CFAV QUEST in December 2012. OceanWaveS GmbH participated in this trial where two wave radar systems (Furuno and DECCA) were used simultaneously on separate radar scanners. The trial was conducted in the vicinity of four moored wave buoys. This report describes the analysis and results performed by OceanWaves on the wave radar and wave buoy data. It focuses on a comparison of the two radar scanners for wave measurement of basic statistical sea state properties and 2D directional spectra. It was concluded that the higher resolution DECCA radar unit was much better suited to wave analysis that the Furuno system. The data was also used to assess a new capability (Sea Surface Elevations, SSE) to identify individual waves from the radar images. Although most SSE comparisons with buoy data were poor due to issues stemming from buoy positioning and radar image requirements, the knowledge gained can be used to improve future experiments for this measurement technique.
