Abstract
Many of the challenges in computer generating a three-dimensional static or dynamic synthetic background are discussed in the context of coastal environment radiative characterization. Emphasis is put on the balance between physical fidelity of the scene reproduction and the approximations necessary in order to achieve reasonable computation times adequate for characterizing a sensor or system. This document covers the tree main components of a 3D synthetic marine environment: sea surface, coastal terrain and atmosphere. More importantly, the many interactions between these components, necessary for accurate scene reproduction, are addressed through accurate radiative transfer computations. Improvements that could eventually be incorporated to the models are also discussed.
