Abstract
A variety of heat-treatments was used in an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of uranium alloys. It was hoped that the ensuing results might bear some relation to the dynamic performance of the material, such as the ability of a high-density uranium alloy projectile to penetrate armour plate. The approach was to look for obvious differences in microstructure between the alloys and to interpret static mechanical properties in terms of observations of metallographs and carbon replicas.
