Abstract
An initial investigation was made to determine if strain softening could be detected in lead. A satisfactory experimental technique based on the use of a thermocouple was developed for temperature measurement. No strain softening was detected at natural compressive strains of up to 1.0. However, the temperature rise occurring during the compression of the lead was seen to be dependent upon strain and strain rate.
