STRAIN AND STRAIN-RATE EFFECTS ON THE CONVERSION OF PLASTIC WORK TO HEAT

Abstract
The relation between plastic work input and the heat generated in cast lead subjected to compressive loading is experimentally investigated. The conversion ratio of work to heat was nearer to one and less dependent upon the amount of plastic strain at higher loading rates. Adiabatic stress-strain curves exhibited strain rate dependence. The heat output was dependent upon the amount of deformation and the rate of deformation.
