Abstract
The Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine (DCIEM) has a HyGe apparatus for the simulation of impact events such as vehicle collisions. The use of this apparatus in tests with human subjects requires that it be "man-rated", i.e., that it be certified as safe for such tests. The requirements for "man-rating" are defined in Part I of this report in terms of engineering reviews and required safety systems. In Part II of this report, a general procedure for research programmes using the HyGe apparatus is described. This includes the development of experimental protocols, the design of the apparatus used to support the subject, the selection of subjects, and procedures for the actual performance of human subject tests.
