Abstract
The adaptation of a video game (VG) platform also known as modeling, is an effective approach to support fast application prototyping for research and development (R&D) purposes. Modding allows demonstrating application concepts inspired from the VG industry at lower cost. However, several challenges await non-initiated project team to modding. The required effort to adapt a VG platform is largely variable and depends on the project scope. To support a team involved in this kind of project, this document summarizes the theory associated to modding and proposes a selection process to guide the identification of the best platform for a given project. A synthetsis of VG platforms well known for their modding capabilities is presented to support the mentioned process. Finally, a modding project conducted by Defence R&D Canada-Valcartier is described.
