Description of the simulation setup for sinkage and trim calculations performed in STAR-CCM+® for the DTMB 5512 model operating in deep water conditions

Abstract
The numerical set-up and grid design used to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations in STAR-CCM+® are recorded in this document to permit comparison with results from different CFD software packages. The parameters of interest are the sinkage and trim of the David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) 5512 surface combatant model for steady operation in deep water. Values for the hull model and virtual towing tank dimensions are provided, along with a completed list of the fluid properties used in the simulation. The boundary conditions, free body motion parameters, volume of fluid wave parameters, and solver information are all detailed in tables. The mesh used in the calculations was created using the built-in STAR-CCM+® gridding tool and all grid parameters have been described and several views of the mesh provided. To permit direct comparison of results the sinkage, trim, and components of drag calculated with STAR-CCM+® are listed along with information on the computational run time. The information contained within this report permits the direct comparison of any CFD software with STAR-CCM+® for one specific case it does not include validation for the predicted performance of the DTMB 5512 hull since that is outside the scope of the current document.
