Abstract
The polarization of the Balkan region in the recent past has produced within that region a certain stability, which however is an artificial one. Whereas traditional tensions have been temporarily subordinated to bipolarity and bloc politics, new - internal as well as external - tensions could well, and probably will, erupt. Indirectly this could mean in the long term a shift in the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.
