Abstract
A simple experimental technique was developed for obtaining hydrogen overvoltage data on lead and lead alloys in sulfuric acid. Tafel plots at room temperature and at -40C were made for lead and three lead alloys and the hydrogen production rates were compared. The influence on the hydrogen evolution reaction of the physical metallurgical properties of the electrode surface was indicated through the use of two methods of surface pretreatment. On the basis of Parson's theoretical treatment, it is proposed that at -40C, molecular hydrogen is produced by the discharge-combination reactions.
