VIBRATIONAL POPULATION INVERSION OF CO IN A FREE-BURNING CS2/02 FLAME

Abstract
Population inversions of certain vibrational levels of CO in its ground electronic state have been observed for the first time in a free-burning CS2/02 flame with added N2, in which the optical axis was transverse to the direction of gas flow. These inversions are attributed to selective depopulation of certain vibrational levels of CO by vibrationally cool N2.
