Abstract
The staff note attempts to set out the political limits of a South African nuclear option. Emphasis is on the manner in which such weapons might be used in regional deterrence and on the manner in which two major factors are: (1) heightened South African insecurity; and (2) increased diplomatic pressure could cause the Republic of South Africa, to use any nuclear option with greater determination both in the context of deterrence and ultimately in terms of actual military use.
