Abstract
Although there is now general recognition that the Horn of Africa is of strategic significance and that area control is in dispute between the superpowers, still lacking is basic understanding of the reasons for the long continuing regional instability. The author, in an attempt to rectify this unacceptable gap in general knowledge, provides a rare insight into the multiplicity of factors which have resulted in almost continuous local hostilities.
